Many of our excursions are open to members only. To find out more about becoming a member of YAYAS click here.
YAYAS organises several excursions each year: these trips range from local walking tours to cross-county visits to places of national historical, archaeological and architectural interest, many not usually open to the public. Excursions are a great way to make like-minded friends and a fantastic opportunity to explore little-known sites with knowledgeable guides. Most excursions have a charge: this is not for profit but to cover costs. YAYAS strives to keep excursions affordable and available to all, but they often book up quickly, so register your interest early to avoid disappointment!
Monday 11th September 2017, 6.30-7.30pm: Pocklington School, Historic Education.
Cost to YAYAS members: free
Currently open to members only.
Pocklington School is an independent school; it was founded in 1514 by John Dolman. There are some interesting historic buildings alongside new architecture. The school is situated in 70 acres of land, on the outskirts of the small market town of Pocklington, 12 miles (19 km) from York and 26 miles (42 km) from Hull. It is the 67th oldest school in the United Kingdom and celebrated its 500th birthday in 2014.
This school has produced some very famous people such as William Wilberforce the MP and abolitionist. Sir Tom Stoppard, O.M., C.B.E., 1950–54, playwright. His portrait, presented to the school by Peter Stoppard (1949–53), hangs in the senior school reception entrance.
Schools are frequently difficult places to access so we hope you'll leap at this opportunity to enjoy this exciting establishment.
Note: YAYAS has not arranged transport for this trip so we anticipate members will drive. If you are keen to attend but don't have transport, other members may be prepared to car-share. The address is West Green, Pocklington, YO42 2NJ. There is a car park with quite rough ground.
To book a place on the trip, please email Tonita Day, YAYAS Membership Secretary at firstname.lastname@example.org or register your interest by telephoning Tonita on 01759 380472
